Week 10: Readings

Reflection: This week I worked on editing the footage, which I filmed with new HD Camcorder. I have had problems transferring the data from the camcorder into Final Cut Pro 7 for the presentation. Since last week I have being reading two new books that I brought from foyles bookshop on Final Cut Pro 7.

Diana, W. (2009) "Apple Pro Training series", Peachpit Press.

Books One: Give information and definitions of what the different formats are and what the advantages and disadvantages are of using HD video and the different formats used for capturing video footage. The book also explains about the different setting which you need to use depending on the format which I will be using when capturing data in semester 2. This book is helping me to understand the technical aspects of Final Cut Pro 7 better and to further understand the terms, which are used in the program. I found this book interesting to read the information was clear and easy to understand while at the same time explaining in detail the definition of words that are used in Final Cut Pro 7.

Larry J. (2009) "Final Cut Pro Power Skills:Work Faster and smarter in Final cut pro 7", Peachpit Press

Book Two: The book explains step by step of how to create a project in Final Cut Pro 7 from being to end. I think that the book will help me with my own project in semester two especially the section which explains how you I use different transitions and also how you work with clips on the timeline I will be very useful. The book gives me information on how to use still images for the cut scene mixed with video footage to allow my work to be visually interesting.

Week 9: Reflection on Progress

Reflection:
This week I have managed to find three more people to interview that are not students for the documentary, One of the people that I am going to interview is a teaching assistant in a school and a mother, the second is a lady that has a son, the third is someone that works with the students union at London Southbank university, the forth a young person that is studying at university but that also works with young people, the forth a technical adviser that works at a school and lastly two student that are currently studying at London Southbank University. A lady at the roundhouse is happy for me to film there but I Just need to decide what courses I want to film, and to ask permission from two parents to interview two young people that will be taking part in a project at the roundhouse. Overall I think that the progress I have made so far is going really well and I am learning new skills for, example the planning which is involved in doing a major project for my third University project.

I think that this week was more productive compared to last week. The project is helping to improve my communication skills and to understand how important it is to consider what question you are going to ask before you interview the person. For week 10 I plan on improve my presentation slide and to practice my presentation ready for week 11.

This week I started to write my annotated bibliography which was to summarise 5 texts I had read and how the readings helped to inform my project. I think that I have made a good start and need to improve on the language used and expand on why I have used the books. The reason for this is to make the text more clearer on how those books have helped me.

Week 8: Evaluation of prototype work

Before Filming:
I plan to film Beth information assistant who works at the roundhouse. I will e-mailing her in the week and ask her if she would mind me filming her. She has agreed to take part in the documentary and to do a mock interview to allow me to practice using the new HD camera, which the university has provided. This is of better quality in terms of the quality of the image and is easier to use compared to the handycam I used last time.

Reflection:
Today I filmed Beth at the Roundhouse in one of the Recording Studios, which are used by many young people. I had already discussed with her the day before that I would meet her before 2:00pm while she was on her lunch break to do the interview and that I would be asking her questions in relation to how are young people represented by the media. I explained that I wanted to film her before Christmas as I needed to practice using the new cameras which will hopefully help to save time so that when I start to do the actual filming in January I would already know how to use the equipment.

I had some problems with sitting up the camera, as I could not get the tripod to work due to not being able to open the tripod. I solved the problem by asking Beth if I could borrow one of the tripods which the Roundhouse had as I was having problems with the one which I had borrowed from the university. I was not happy about wasting time trying to get the tripod to work but enjoyed filming in the studios. I feel that the more practice I have with using the camera will help to improve the camera positions and help me with affectively using natural light which is needed when filming with the camera.

Tutorial and Improvement for Project Proposal:
This week I had a tutorial with Katrina to discuss the project proposal. I think that the tutorial was helpful and I will improve my project proposal based on the feedback that I received from Katrina. I must now concentrate on being more specific about who I am going to interview, location and start an annotated bibliography.

week 8: Progress

Reflection
Due to being unwell I feel that I have not made as much progress as I would have liked, but I hope to be able to do some filming with the new camera next week and to have done a rough a production plan.

Week 7: Presentation

Reflection
Today we had a presentation, which I felt went well. Since the presentation in week 3 I think that my understanding of what are some of the issues surrounding the way in which young people are represented by the media and what the general public's feeling are towards how young people are represented by the media was an insight into today's society. I felt that the layout of my presentation looked professional and the amount of text on each side was well balanced allowing the audience to focus on what I was saying. Also I think that I explained each point in detail.

Improvement:
The improve which I would make are to practice my presentation before hand to allow me to work out my pacing as I feel that this could have been better if I had practiced time myself before doing my presentation in week 7. Overall I think that my presentation skills are good and the images I use are visually interesting.

Preparing for Presentation in week 10:
To prepare for the presentation in week 10 I will practice what I am going to say for the presentation in front of my mum and sister to get constructive feedback on how I can improve my skills for the final presentation. I will ask my mum to time me and to check that the presentation does not run over time. I will also ask her to give me feedback on what she thought I did well and what she thinks I could improve on.

Interviews:
I have interviewed people in the street asking them their opinions on the way in which young people, especially youths and questioning if they are shown in a fair light. This was a good experience for me although when I first started asking people in the street if they could spare a few minutes to fill out the questionnaire I felt nervous about approaching people in the street but after a while I started to feel more relaxed and my confidence is greatly improved.
